Aleksandyr Saykin, of East Longmeadow in Hampshire County, pleaded guilty to a charge of negligent operation of a motor vehicle, the Northwestern District Attorney's Office said.
Niles N. Robbins, 46, of Wales, died on May 15, 2021, when Saykin crashed into his Harley Davidson motorcycle on Route 9 in Belchertown near the intersection of Ware and Enoch Sanford roads, the prosecutor said. Robbins crashed into the side of Saykin's SUV when he turned in front of the bike, authorities said.
Robins' died of his injuries at Mary Lane Hospital. He was the father of six and grandfather of five children.
His 52-year-old female passenger of Charlton was seriously injured in the crash and needed to be airlifted to Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester for treatment. Her name was not released.
A judge sentenced Saykin to three years of probation, and he must complete a safe driving course and serve 100 hours of community service, the DA's office said.
Authorities suspended Saykin's license after the crash. The judge ruled he cannot drive a vehicle or seek to reinstate his license.
The sentence was part of a plea agreement, the prosecutor said.
“These are amongst the most difficult cases to craft a fair sentence. Mr. Saykin’s split-second, poor
decision cost Mr. Robbins his life and his passenger to suffer serious injuries,” said Assistant District Attorney Andrew Covington. “The Commonwealth appreciates Mr. Saykin’s willingness to accept responsibility for his actions.”
